Etat des stocks conchylicoles normands en 2000 ArchiMer
Kopp, Joel; Messiaen, Gregory; Le Gagneur, Eric; Cornette, Florence; Ropert, Michel.
Crassostrea gigas and Mytilus edulis are reared in four areas along the eastern coast of Cotentin (Normandy). Every five years, a stock assessment survey, based on a stratified random sampling is carried out using aerial photographs. During September 2000, oysters bags and mussel banks random samplings have been weighed on leasing grounds and in random sampled farms in order to evaluate the overall total gross and net weights breeded (oysters 40 000 and mussels 17 000 metric tons, net weights). Age compositions of each stock in each rearing area have been computed. This last stock assessment showed that cultural regulations are less and less observed in Normandy's breeding areas. A strong increase in bag densities has been noticed since 1995. As stock...

Improvement of remote setting of the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) on French platic pipes ArchiMer
Baud, Jean-pierre; Jolly, C.; Bodoy, Alain.
The oysters culture in France is based on a natural spatfall, collected on cultches in setting areas. The collectors are then transfered on intertidal parcs for development during 1.5 to 3 years. The subsequent ongrowing stage is performed after separating the oysters and putting them in bags or by off-bottom cultivation. In order to improve the stock turnover and to improve the rearing conditions for the juveniles, experiments were performed to define optimal conditions for remote setting. After considering the previous studies a standard density of 2 000 larvae per cultch (plastic pipe) was selected. This corresponded to an average, theoretical density of 2.3 larvae.cm-2. The resulting density, at the end of the growing stage should average 25 kg of...

Modeling Japanese oyster physiological processes under natural tidal variation in suspended particulate matter ArchiMer
Barille, Laurent; Prou, Jean.
Feeding and growth of the Japanese oyster Crassostrea gigas is simulated by a deterministic model. However, physiological processes, estimated by statistical relationships, have not been tested under extreme environmental conditions such as high level of suspended particulate matter. Ecophysiological experiments were therefore conducted in situ in the Bay of Marennes-Oléron during a spring and neap tide cycle in May 1991, to get a better representation of 2 important components of the energy budget of the Japanese oyster: clearance rate and selection efficiency. The relationships previously established by Raillard et al. (1993) are re-evaluated by integrating the action of high seston load, typical of tidal effect within estuaries, on the physiological...
